Who would say that we will, besides the fish, catch a sparkling wine in the sea! Perhaps it sounds impossible, but on the Island of Krk we were convinced of the opposite. An oenologist who once had an excellent idea, which he could not implement in his basement, found it at the bottom of the sea.
What exactly is hidden beneath the sea?
Back in 2006, one agricultural association from Krk island made an experiment. At a depth of 30 feet they lowered steel crates with bottles of sparkling wine. And no less than 660! Oenologists who stand behind this venture say that the whole story began as an experiment - they wanted to check whether the wine would survive in the sea or it will be the total fiasco. The instinct has not deceived them. The result of their boldness is excellent, top quality, unique in the world, the first sparkling wine from the sea. The next year, in the sea, as many as 2000 bottles were lowered to the sea. Half a mile away from the Vrbnik coast, where there is no mesh and spout, perfect peace and a constant temperature of 12 degrees Celsius are created, ideal for fermenting sparkling wine. They "slept" for a full four years...
What's the taste of sparkling wine?
Given the fact that these sparkling wines are made exclusively from Vrbnicka zlahtina, indigenous variety of the island, we do not exaggerate when we say that the flavor is completely unique in the world! It is rich in sugar, which means that it is sweet enough not to add any sugar or any liqueur to the sparkling wine. A special taste is affected also by the environment - the pressure in the bottle is higher under the sea than in the basement. It results in smaller bubbles of sparkling wine, which means that it pearls even more beautiful, and those who enjoy the sparkling drink for years, convince us that they can feel the light scent of the sea.
Getting the bottles out of the sea
Almost the same experience as tasting this sparkling wine is also the very rhyme of a bottle drawing from the depths of the sea. A bottle of champagne decorated with numerous shells and corals is the result of a natural design after many years of laying at the bottom of the sea. The sparkling glasses and the happy face of the visitor give the impression that from year to year the sea is getting better and better at making sparkling wine. The event itself is accompanied by excellent island food, lamb, prosciutto and surlice.
