The history of viticulture on the island of Krk dates back to the past thousands of years. One of the interesting historical stories ist that the oldest wooden wine barrel is mentioned in a roman text describing a naval battle between Caesar and Pompeii right next to the island of Krk!
A thousand years later, the Bašćanska ploča written on Krk, one of the oldest monuments of Croatian literacy was adorned with motifs of vine leaves. Wine production on the island of Krk has continued until today, 2,000 years after Caesar.
Vrbnička žlahtina
Vrbnička žlahtina is the most famous wine of the island of Krk and one of the most famous wines of Croatia. It is a white wine produced with the autochthonous Krk kind, the white Žlahtina. The cultivation and production of Vrbnička žlahtina is limited to a narrow area around the town of Vrbnik.
Vrbnička žlahtina is pale yellow to straw yellow, delicate aroma and fresh taste, with an 11 % alcohol content. It is recommended in addition to the sheep's cheese, all fish and white meat dishes.
Champagne from the sea bottom - Valomet
Valomet, the champagne from the bottom of the sea, has become a world famous phenomenon in less than 15 years. This sparkling wine brings together the best that the island of Krk has to offer. The champagne itself is produced exclusively from the Vrbnička žlahtina, and it ripens in the seabed of the island of Krk, at 32 metres of depth.
These particular conditions in which the champagne matures - pressure 4 times stronger than on the mainland, darkness, and cold sea at that depth create something that cannot be created on the land. Just the extraction of the bottle from the bottom must be a special event.
The results are beautiful bottles covered with coral and clams. The champagne itself is dry with fruit flavorings and some salty notes. It can only be bought in Vrbnik.
Prosecco
Croatian Prosecco is expressed as a sweet dessert wine that you can find in local wineries and restaurants of the island of Krk. Although it carries a similar name as an Italian Processo, it is a completely different grape variety and a different kind of wine.
It is made from grapes that are raisined before the fermentation in order for its natural sugars to condense and produce sweeter wine. It is recommended with sweet desserts and treats of the island of Krk, for example, figs cookies.
